Last week November 29, 2010 we were informed by the knot that we won the knot best of weddings 2012, but we didn’t know for which category. Of course Nick and his team would say hands down DJ services is the clear winner while Tara would rebuttal that her team of photographers take the Gold in the Photography category.

Well, it all came to light on December 5, 2011 Monday morning when UPC received a call from The Knot with some more exciting news. The Knot came to the conclusion that Ultimate Party Central is Awarded “TWO” Awards for Both Photography & Disc Jockey Services after finding that almost all of our clients reviews were only being posted under the Photography Category even though DJ services was also being raved about. First off, let’s hear from a two couples who picked their DJs without having the knowledge contained in this report. These are true DJ horror stories from the New Jersey-area newlyweds.

• David & Christina , had their wedding reception at Bridgewater Manor on October 15, 2011. “We gave our DJ a $500.00 deposit over a year before our wedding,” says David who after a long engagement to Christina had their wedding reception at Bridgewater Manor. “About a month before our wedding we sent out another deposit and than not even 2 weeks before our wedding I decided to call the number on the contract and it was disconnected! It was so stressful trying to find a DJ less than 2 weeks before our wedding. We still don’t know what happened to him, or our deposit.”

To help you in finding the right DJ for your wedding, here is a list of questions you should ask to ensure you are dealing with a professional who can get the job done right.

Questions to Ask when interviewing a DJ (and the right answers!)

• How long have you been in business? ( At LEAST 7 years! )
• How many DJs do you employ? ( Make sure there is enough to guarantee a DJ is on-call.)
• How many weddings has my DJ performed at? ( Minimum of 100. )
• Does the DJ work with the photographers and banquet managers? ( Yes. )
• Are we allowed to submit our own music list and will you play it? ( Yes, Yes, Yes.)
• What attire will you wear to the wedding? ( A tuxedo. )
• How big is your music collection? (At least 20,000 songs. )
• What type of sound system do you use? How old is it? (Newer, professional-grade gear. )
• Is there someone to replace the DJ in case of emergency? ( Yes. He will be prepared and standing by. )
• Will you bring back-up gear to the reception hall? ( Absolutely. )
• How long in advance does the DJ arrive to the reception hall? ( a minimum of 1 ½ hours. )
• Are you insured? (Do not hire a company that doesn’t have at least $1,000,000 of coverage.)
• Will we receive a personal consultation with our DJ prior to the wedding date ? ( Yes. )
• Can I have the number for the wedding you did on xx/xx/xxxx date? I’d like to call them for a reference. ( No problem. )
• Do you require a security deposit? How much? ( Usually about one third of the contracted price.)
• Do you accept major credit cards? ( Yes. This signals a professional & reputable company. )
• How much do you cost? ( Stay away from “bargain” DJs!) ex. below
  • How many hours does that include? (As many as you need.)
  • How much for each additional hour? ( As long as it takes.)
  • Does that include all the gear, such as lights and equipment? (Everything is included.)

Your wedding doesn’t have to be a disaster. You can find quality entertainment and have the night of your dreams…IF you know what to look for.

If you or your spouse always dreamed of being a model, then a trash the dress photo session might be right for you. Also known as Free to Flaunt, Rock the Frock, and bridal glamour sessions, these sessions have newlyweds, sometimes just brides, getting dressed up again after the wedding to pose in unusual places without fear of dirtying their attire.

Go ahead, you know you want to. Trash it. Get it dirty. Get it wet. Roll around in the mud. Drench it in the ocean. Totally trash it.
Why? … Why not?  You’ve made a commitment to your husband. He’s your one and only true love, right?  Then you’ll never need the dress again. And no, your daughter won’t wear it in 20-30 years. So you have two choices:

1) Suffocate it in plastic and throw it in a closet

2) Show your husband how committed you are by trashing the dress, and get some great fun pictures while you do it!

Is the wedding dress ruined?
 Not necessarily. Should you decide to give this trend a try, you (and your wedding photographer) will discuss beforehand just how badly you’ll trash your gown. The concept is to relax (finally!), let your creativity flow, and enjoy wearing your dress one last time in a fresh, liberating way. Some take a subtle approach for their photo session with a walk through the woods or a swim in a pool or pond, while others go a step further by heading to construction sites, changing greasy car tires, or wading through muddy puddles. Brides who have embraced the trend say that a TTD shoot gives the gown new life in lieu of simply sitting in the closet. Plus, they’ll have photos in their wedding album that can look as though they’re straight from the pages of Vogue.
Who “trashed the dress” first?
 Las Vegas wedding photographer John Michael Cooper is credited with staging the first TTD shoot. After becoming bored with more traditional wedding photo sessions, Cooper began asking brides to pose after their wedding day in unusual (and less pristine) settings. The sentiment among many photographers who offer TTD shoots is the same: Given the unique photos that result, it’s a win-win opportunity for brides and photographers alike. Trash The Dress Tips

• The term “trash” may be misleading, as many dresses only get wet or dirty. A professional cleaning service should restore the dress to brand-new quality, enabling the wearer to then preserve and/or keep the dress, or to donate it to charity.
• Rather than trashing your own wedding dress, consider buying a cheap dress off the rack and trashing that instead. For your husband, you might consider him wearing some less formal clothes of his own. Or, he may just need to plan to rent his suit/tux long enough through the day after your wedding.
• A photographer looking for “best light” will likely suggest late afternoon for a start time–about four or five PM.
• If you want a bouquet, you could have a new one delivered to you from your florist, could pick up one at a local grocery store (beautiful flowers for a reasonable price!) or farmer’s market. Some brides go without.
• Brides that have done a day after shoot can attest to how much more relaxed the bride and groom feel–grooms that may have been a little uptight for formals appreciate this laid-back photo shoot.

TTD is about the emotions and love that are surrounding the sessions,
not the dark side on which some photographers may focus in an effort to provoke.
